What Are Neuromodulators?

Though Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva all have different brand names, they provide the same effects: briefly relaxing the muscles around the eyes, eyebrow, and forehead areas to halt skin creasing that leads to the formation of wrinkles. These FDA-approved products come from a purified version of the botulinum protein, which blocks the connection between the nerves and the facial muscles. With less skin creasing occurring, wrinkles ease.

If you’re concerned about mild to moderate frown lines and crow’s feet, and are looking for a  pain-free, minimally invasive correction, Botox, Xeomin, Dysport (pronounced “diss-port”) or Nuceiva are excellent options for you.

The goal of getting injections with any of these products is to achieve a refreshed, well-rested look, while maintaining your ability to make natural facial expressions. Often, a combination of products can deliver optimal results. You can discuss the best options for you in your consultation.

What to Expect When You Get Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva Injections

Injectable products like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva have revolutionized the aesthetic industry. They are becoming increasingly popular, especially among busy patients who can’t spare time for a more invasive procedure involving an extended recovery.

These products deliver a quick and easy way to look naturally younger and more rejuvenated without a lengthy recovery period. After getting injections, you should be able to pick up right where you left off in your daily routine.

The side effects associated with neuromodulators injections are relatively mild and include bruising, soreness, and swelling around the injection area. When performed by an expert injector, the injections themselves are associated with minimal pain.

While these injectable products have long-lasting effects, they aren’t permanent. After about three to four months, nerve impulses will begin to reach the targeted muscles, allowing them to contract again and causing the wrinkles to return. However, Dr. Kabiri can maintain the natural-looking results of these neuromodulators with regular injections.

Frequently Asked Questions About Neuromodulators

If you are still trying to determine whether cosmetic neuromodulator injections would be a good anti-aging solution for you, use the question-and-answer section below to help you become a more educated patient.

You may be wary of using a product whose goal is to cause muscle paralysis. However, neuromodulators will not affect the nerves that cause sensation, and you will still be able to make normal, natural facial expressions. When you are getting cosmetic neuromodulators injected, it’s essential to find an experienced doctor who can accurately judge how much of the product you will need, based on the size of your muscles.

Botox, Dysport,  Xeomin and Nuceiva are safe for any adult to use, and there is no “right” or “wrong” age to start getting injections. We have started seeing many patients beginning to get their injections in their 20s and early 30s as a preventive anti-aging measure. Anyone who is troubled by mild to moderate wrinkles can benefit from these products.

Ideal neuromodulators results will leave you looking subtly younger, happier, and more relaxed. While people may notice your improved appearance, we pride ourselves in delivering natural-looking results.

Some people are understandably nervous about using a product with the word “toxin” in its name. Although these products do come from the same toxin that causes botulism, the amount used to treat wrinkles is a tiny fraction of the dosage that is considered safe.

In certain circumstances, Botox injections are not recommended, including if:

  • you have a skin infection
  • you have a neuromuscular condition like myasthenia gravis
  • you’re taking certain medicines
  • you’re pregnant or breastfeeding

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also delay getting injections of these products. If you are taking any blood thinners, you should stop doing so a week before your appointment to help minimize bruising.

Although Botox injections are relatively safe, minor side effects are possible. These include:

  • Pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Chills

Some rare side effects are specific to the injection spot. For example, if you receive injections for crow’s feet and brow furrows, you may experience:

  • Drooping eyelids
  • Uneven eyebrows
  • Dry eyes
  • Excessive tearing

When you choose a skilled practitioner such as Dr. Kabiri to perform your injections, you minimize your chances of experiencing these side effects.

The results of neuromodulator injections are not immediate; instead, they reveal themselves gradually. You can expect to begin enjoying your improved appearance three to four days after treatment. If you are getting cosmetic neuromodulators in anticipation of an event such as a class reunion, wedding, or vacation, you will want to plan accordingly. Dr. Kabiri always offers a follow-up visit in 2 weeks after injection to assess the result and address your concerns.
